The Arthurian is a Masonic Lodge who meet in Cosham under the province of Hampshire & the Isle Of Wight.
The Lodge name “Arthurian” derives from a book about Arthurian legends read by one of the founding members, this was then used as the lodge name.
WHO:
The Arthurian Lodge which was founded in April 1937 by a number of members who had links to the Round Table and indeed several member of the lodge were both past and present Round Table members.
The founding Worshipful Master was Wm J.F. Freeston
To this day, the lodge has links to other “Round “ lodges.
The name “ARTHURIAN” derives from a book about Arthurian legends read by one of the founding members, and the founders then agreed to that name.
WHERE:
Our meetings are held at Cosham Masonic Centre,
Although initially the lodge met at Cosham, in Sept 1939, it transferred to the (new) Masonic Hall in Derby Road, staying there for 34 years until it closed and the lodge transferred back in 1972 to its current location Cosham Centre.
WHEN:
We meet 5 times per year (Feb,Mar,Apr, Oct, Nov) and Tyle at 18:00
MEMBERSHIP:
In 1949 the lodge decided to open up its membership to all, rather than just past or present Round Tablers.
In 1951 the lodge initiated its first “lewis” to be received into the lodge, and it has since done several of these.
ACTIVITIES:
he lodge has over many years helped and supported many charities both national and local, by fundraising and sponsorship.
In 1973, the Almoner started to distribute Christmas Gifts to the wives of deceased brethren, by personally visiting each one, a tradition still carried out to this day.
In 1974 the lodge held its first Ladies Night at the Royal Beach Hotel. This event immediately established itself into the Arthurian diary.
From 1977, Dickie Bird (wrote/directed/took part) in a series of Masonic themed plays (in costume) which all attracted much interest and attendance, and was greatly appreciated by all who attended.
The Lodge usually holds a White table event annually to invite wives/partners to the evening dinner. This event is also open to any interested men who may wish to join or know more about Freemasonry.
We also hold an annual Golf Tournament, again open to members (and their guests).
During the summer months we usually hold an open BBQ, hosted by one of the brethren.
